Week 39

4/1/2024: Painting Textures

When working on the final painting I went back to revisit the style inspirations from the Miro board to inform my decisions on how the overall painting should look and feel with lighting and brush strokes.

Render VS Painting:

When working on the painting I wanted to find a way that I could combined a painterly style that matches the references from our miro board as well as ensuring that the character looks like an accurate representation. This lead me to the idea to first create the image as a render in Maya and then filter/paint over it.

One of my peers showed me a cool way to use the generative AI tool in Photoshop to create a low opacity filter layer on top of the image to create the desired brush stroke effect. I used this method to create six different versions of the painting and then layered them with various blending modes and opacity. For each layer I masked out details it generated that I felt didn't fit such as stray shadows or marks that didn't contribute to the overall look. I then created a layer on top of this layer stack and hand painted over a lot of the details myself to bring back brush strokes exactly where I wanted them to be, but following the overall style of what I was working with. To illustrate the progression of time I wanted to make three different in progress versions of the painting, an underpainting, half painted, and fully painted. I worked backwards from the fully painted version to create the sketch and the half painted versions. There will also be a fourth version of the painting where it is more erratic, demonic and has transformed into the mothman creature version that is shown at the end of the film.

4/2/2024: Canvas Textures

On April 2nd I used the painting generator tool I researched and tested from Emrecan Cubukcu on Art Station last semester for substance painter to input the painting image into on the canvas file.

Here's a demo of how the tool works:

4/5/2024: Canvas Texture Slider

I worked with my team to determine a method to build a texture slider into the canvas as a rig attribute so that for each shot the animator can determine which version of the texture needs to appear.

4/6/2024: Painter Texture Fix

I spent a bit of time fixing an issue again with the Painter texture file where the ambient occlusion on the Substance Painter file bake casts shadows on the mesh where they shouldn't be when the hair rig slider is used to pick a different hairstyle. I also fixed a roughness issue and make the hand painted details on the face and hands a little less dark as they show up very dark in Arnold.

4/8/2024: Interior Night Master Lighting

I did some test renders of the Interior Night Master lighting from various angles. I would like to eventually include the lighting setups on a demo reel. I have

Comparing each lighting setup side by side gives this result

Personal Professional News: Sony iCAD Internship

3/31/2024:

On March 31st I applied to the Sony iCAD Internship in Vancouver for the texturing artist emphasis. I am very excited and I am crossing my fingers that I hear back. I was recommended for the role and have connected with the hiring manager Greg Berridge on LinkedIn.

I submitted the following materials as well as a cover letter:
